The Spiral of Love™ is a developmental psychology framework that maps patterns of emotional, relational, and ethical maturation across nine sequential stages.
In this framework, emotional maturity is defined as the developmental capacity to regulate affect, integrate identity, and relate to others with increasing responsibility, coherence, and alignment beyond survival-based strategies.
The framework is presented as a theory-first model intended for research discussion, educational exploration, and interdisciplinary dialogue. It is not a diagnostic instrument and is not a substitute for clinical assessment.
What the framework addresses
Many relationship models describe traits, styles, or pathologies in isolation. The Spiral of Love™ proposes a developmental lens: relational patterns are understood as stage-based expressions of emotional maturity rather than fixed identities.
The framework is designed to support clear language for:
- Emotional regulation and responsibility
- Relational patterns across intimacy, conflict, power, and care
- Developmental transitions (thresholds) between stages
- Recursive growth (integration, regression, and re-stabilization)
Structure of the Spiral
The Spiral consists of nine stages. The spiral metaphor indicates that development can be iterative rather than strictly linear.
1. Surviving Love
2. Pleasing Love
3. Performing Love
4. Projecting Love
5. Awakening Love
6. Conscious Love
7. Sovereign Love
8. Devotional Love
9. Transcendent Love
Stage definitions are provided on the Framework page.
Research status and scope
The Spiral of Love™ is published as a theoretical framework. It makes no claim of clinical diagnostic authority. Where clinical or therapeutic applications are explored, they are framed as hypotheses or interpretations rather than medical guidance.
You can also explore the application of the Spiral of Love™ through a quiz, to be released shortly. Sign up to the Emotional Maturity Map to be kept up to date about the project
